The next morning, we were awoken with a shrill scream. We all ran outside to find many different people holding dead corpses of those they knew, all of them had the mark we had been seeing. Lycyra then explained that this was done by an unknown warlock and to stop this, we had to find him. Felric then started going out of the town until he ran straight into an invisible barrier. He then gathered his men to start looking for holes in the barrier, if there were any. We then got the idea to try to destroy the symbols that were around the community. We then all split off to go find them and try to destroy them. I found one on a fallen tree and studied it, trying to figure out how to destroy it. Then I used the True Strike spell I knew to find a weak point in the magical symbol, and found the weak point. Lycyra and Xillow came over and I told her where the weak point was. She then destroyed it and we made our way over to Amnon and Kallista and destroyed the other symbols.
We felt a sense of hope as we headed back to the town. We destroyed all the symbols and now, the barriers would go down so everyone can escape.
Our hopes were dashed once we discovered we were the only ones that could leave the barrier.
Lycyra then told us that the seal was also a map of the village. We then figured that the weak point that I found in the seal could also be a weak point for the barrier. We found that the weak point was the white house Lycyra was afraid to go to. She stood a distance away as we approached the house.
I don’t quite have the words to aptly describe what I saw, but I will try anyway. There, we found white flowers all over the house and three empty graves on the outside. My heart starting to sink lower, we entered into the house, hoping we wouldn’t find corpses. Instead, we found more white flowers. As we turned away, the graves were filled with more of those white flowers.
I began realizing why Lycyra didn’t want to enter the threshold of the house.
As we returned to Lycyra, we all understood that this was her family’s house. She then told us the symbolism behind the flowers and the story of the house with three graves:
When everyone in the community died, her family died also. When she returned to the house, she carried her dead father, mother, and little brother to their beds and placed a white flower on each of them except for her little brother. The white flowers were a symbol of hope but to her, it was a promise to them that she would bring them back. She then spoke to us of her yearning to understand why people must die and how they could be brought back.
Once she finished, Amnon gave her a hug and we started heading to the center of the seal/map. Amnon and Kallista headed into the forest to find anything while I stayed with Lycyra and Xillow.
A few minutes later, we hear the sound of Amnon’s witchbolt and started running towards it. We got there and found them under attack by some mages. We then slew all of them, save one whom we interrogated. The Warlock’s purpose, we found out, was to figure out how to kill hundreds at once. He harnesses the soul energy from the dead to create a barrier that would steal away the very air and suffocate those trapped inside.
We anxiously ran back to the community but found that the barrier stopped us. We couldn’t pass through anymore.
We then watched as every living thing in the town die right before our eyes.
This is what Lycyra lived through, I thought to myself. She lived through a massacre that used neither sword nor bow.
Hearts heavy, we finally were able to pass through the barrier. We went to Thorin’s house and found a dying elf with a journal, him clasping it tightly. We took the journal from him as he died. He recorded everything that had happened. People and livestock started dying and there was nothing that could’ve been done.
We then headed over to her family’s home and saw a hand in the doorway. We stood and watched as Lycyrya repeated her own history and carried each of her family members onto their beds. She then picked those same white flowers and put them on her parents, except for her little brother. She made a promise to him, saying that she’ll bring them back someday.
Then there was a bright light that blinded all of us. The next thing I knew, I was on the ground, back in the Underdark, in that same room with the accursed obelisk that had brought upon misery to us all. It then glowed that symbol as it became burned onto Lycyra’s hand.
Despite all that I have seen and recorded, despite the total despair each of us I’m sure has faced, I remain somewhat hopeful that someday, perhaps, we’ll leave this place. And perhaps, the dark memories that follow us, will be left behind in this place as well.
